Welcome to the Complete Guide for Carolina Computer Science Majors

About the UNC-CH CS Department

UNC-Chapel Hill’s computer science department was founded in 1964 by Turing Award winner Dr. Frederick Brooks Jr. It is ranked #25 among U.S. computer science graduate programs. UNC is known as the “Public Ivy”, being a top 5 public university in the United States. UNC’s computer science curriculum is strongly focused on the theoretical aspects of CS such as analyzing algorithms and models of languages and computation. The classes are very big but still hard to get into, due to the limited number of professors and classroom space. This major requires you to be proactive, such as reaching out to TAs and LAs when you need help and and force yourself to stick to good coding practices rather than just trying to get an A on an assignment.

About Us

We are three computer science students who were inspired by the difficulty of navigating the major to create a comprehensive guide for all students. It’s hard getting into the classes you need and receiving that first summer internship offer, but we hope this guide will help you get one step closer to your goal!

We have compiled course reviews, relevant links to resources, tips and advice, etc. to hopefully provide you with a smoother college experience!
